Epiplatys chevalieri chevalieri is present in western Democratic Republic of the Congo, upstream from and including Pool Malebo, while E. chevalieri nigricans is present in central and eastern parts of the Congo River basin, from the Kasai and Sankuru drainages to the "Portes d'Enfer" waterfalls, including the middle Congo River, Ruki, Lulonga, Mongala, Itimbiri, Lindi-Tshopo and Uele drainages (Ref. 47774). Also recorded from the Lukenie basin (Ref. 127185), Aruwimi (Ref. 106290), lower Lomami and Wagenia Falls (Ref. 106245), and the Luilaka and Yenge rivers in the Ruki drainage (Ref. 93897).
